Šestnáctiletá obézní Afroameričanka Claireece „Precious" Jones žije krutým životem. Nejen, že hlavní hrdinku psychicky týrá a ponižuje její matka (Mo´Nique), ale navíc čeká již druhé dítě se svým nepřítomným otcem. Oporou jí není ani okolní svět a školou prochází s dobrými známkami, aniž by si kdokoliv všiml, že neumí číst ani psát. Precious je někdy na dně, ale nikdy se nevzdává. Pod hrozbou vyloučení ze školy přijímá nabídku přestupu do alternativní školy. I když nezná význam slova alternativní, instinkt jí napovídá, že je to příležitost, na kterou čekala. Zde potkává trpělivou učitelku, paní Rainovou. Precious nastupuje na novou cestu, která ji vyvede z temnoty, bolesti a bezmocnosti k lásce a svobodnému rozhodování.
